Buddha Puja - August 30th

Jerome Bowers, owner of Crystal Raven on Main Street in Jonesborough, donated a standing Buddha, which is a Burmese Mandalay Buddha.

Made of gilded wood, these statues were made beginning in 1850. The outstretched hands represented an attitude of helping others. The small object held in one hand is the fruit of the Chebulic Myrobalan tree, known as Harataki, which is common in South Asia and in Ayurvedic medicine.

For thousands of years it has appeared in ancient texts of different cultures for its healing properties, which are supported by scientific research. Building or donating stupas, Buddha statues, or sacred religious art is considered one of the Eight Great Meritorious Deeds in Theravada Buddhist tradition. 

We will welcome the new standing Buddha statue to ADMC by performing a Buddha puja by reciting Pali chantings per the Theravada tradition. A Buddha puja is a devotional ceremony in Buddhism used to show respect to the Buddha, his teachings (the Dhamma), and the community of monks (the Sangha). We will offer flowers and other offerings to the Buddha. 

The puja will take place at ADMC (in the garden, weather permitting) on Sunday, August 30, 2026 at 10:15 followed by meditation downstairs at 11:00. An offering of flowers is welcome.
